If you read my last blog post, you know my definition of "lifestyle photography" and why I feel that having your session done in your home is so important (if you missed it you can read it here). Now let me show you what a full lifestyle newborn session with me looks like:
I like to keep things laid back and relaxed in all of my sessions, but especially with newborns. I know how crazy insane those first few weeks can be, and the last thing you want to worry about is getting everyone ready, piling all the baby gear into the car and making it to a scheduled appointment on time. In my sessions, I come to YOU. No pressure, no stress. If the baby is sleeping when I arrive, no problem! We'll do her individual shots first and let her sleep right through it. No need to disrupt her sleep schedule. As a former hospital newborn photographer, I have photographed more than 100 babies in the past year, so I know how to adapt.
Typically I like to shoot mainly in the parents' bedroom, as long as there is good window light. I always have a flash with me just in case, but I much prefer to keep it natural. I love to work with soft light and shadows, and it's a big part of my artistic style. There's usually a nice big window in mom and dad's bedroom, so the bed is a great place for the whole family to cuddle up, including pets!
A newborn session isn't complete without a few shots in the nursery.
Of course, I always include siblings. However, sometimes big sisters aren't quite as excited about this as we'd like. But the beauty of doing lifestyle photos is that it doesn't really matter. And in fact, sometimes those turn out to be some of the best shots!
Eventually, they come around.
Mom shared with me that big sis has never really been a fan of family photo sessions, and it's been challenging to get her to smile for them. That's precisely the difference between lifestyle vs. traditional portraits - there's no need to "get" her to smile, but rather, it's finding the things that make her smile all on her own.
A beautiful ending to a beautiful session 💕
I am now including a custom designed soft cover photo book with all of my in-home sessions.
